A note before you start
Marketplaces change their image rules from time to time. Treat the numbers below as common starting points and check the platform's own help pages before publishing.
Amazon
The main image is generally expected on a pure white background with the product filling most of the frame. A long side of about 1000 pixels or more is commonly recommended so that zoom works, and many sellers use 2000×2000.
Etsy
Square or consistent images look tidy in shop grids. Many sellers use large originals and let the platform scale them. Try 2000×2000 or 1200×1200 square images. See the Etsy listing background tool.
eBay
eBay generally asks for sharp photos with a long side of at least 500 pixels, and larger images such as 1600×1600 look better when buyers zoom. See the eBay photo tool.
Shopify
Shopify product images are often square. A size such as 2048×2048 is a common upper bound, and keeping every image the same ratio makes a collection page look consistent. See the Shopify product photo tool.
The quick workflow
- Remove or whiten the background.
- Resize to the square size you chose.
- Compress to keep the file small, for example 500KB.
