How to Take Good Product Photos with Your Phone (Simple Setup)

A low-cost setup for clean product photos that sell, plus how to prepare them for a store.

You do not need a studio

A recent phone camera, a window and a sheet of white paper or poster board are enough for clean listing photos.

Set up the light

Place a table next to a window and shoot in soft daylight. Avoid direct sun, which makes harsh shadows, and avoid mixing room lamps with daylight, which gives odd colours. A white board opposite the window bounces light back and softens shadows.

Set up the background

Curve a white sheet or poster board from the table up the wall so there is no visible edge behind the product. A plain background also makes later background removal much cleaner.

Shoot

Keep the phone level, use a stack of books or a cheap tripod, wipe off fingerprints, and fill most of the frame with the product. Take several angles: front, back, side, a close-up of details and one for scale.

Edit and prepare

Crop with the free cropper, remove or whiten the background with the product photo background tool, then check the size you need: 1000×1000, 2000×2000 or another size from the marketplace rules.

Keep pages fast

Large photos slow a store down. After editing, use the 200KB or 500KB compressor so pages load quickly with little visible loss.
