Size and shape
- Printed photo: 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm).
- Digital photo: square, 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 pixels, saved as a JPEG.
- Head size: between 1 and 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm) from chin to top of head, which is about 50% to 69% of the photo height.
Background and lighting
- Plain white or off-white background with no pattern.
- Even light on your face, with no shadows on you or on the wall.
- No filters, beauty modes or heavy editing.
Pose and expression
- Face the camera straight on with your head level.
- Neutral expression or a slight natural smile, both eyes open.
- Keep your hair off your eyes and wear nothing on your head unless you have a religious or medical reason.
- Glasses are generally not accepted, so check the current rules.
Digital file rules
The Department of State digital image rules for visa photos allow up to 240 KB. Limits for an online passport renewal can differ, so read the instructions on your own application page before you upload.
