These come from the US Department of State digital image requirements. Always read the current instructions for the program you are applying to, because rules and forms can change.
Prepare the photo step by step
- Take a front-facing photo in daylight against a plain white or off-white wall.
- Crop it to a square so your head fills about half to two thirds of the height.
- Export it as a JPEG and make sure it is under 240 KB.
- Check that the file opens normally and looks sharp.

Mistakes to avoid
- Uploading a rectangular photo, or one with large empty space around the head.
- Using a photo with filters, shadows or a patterned wall.
- Using a file above the size limit, which the form may reject.
- Reusing one photo for several people. Each person needs their own photo.
