How to Make an Image Background Transparent (PNG)

Turn a photo or logo into a transparent PNG you can place on any colour, website or design.

What a transparent background is

A transparent background means the pixels around your subject are empty, so whatever is behind the image shows through. Only formats with an alpha channel, such as PNG and WebP, can store it. JPG cannot.

Make it transparent

Open the transparent background maker, choose your image and keep the background set to Transparent. Download the PNG.

Logos with a solid backdrop

For a logo on a flat white or coloured square, use the logo background remover. Logos with sharp edges give the cleanest result.

Check the edges

Preview the result against a dark and a light background. If you see a light halo, move the Edge slider a few steps to the left.

Use it in a design

Place the PNG on top of any colour or photo in Canva, PowerPoint, Google Slides or your website. Keep the PNG; if you save it as JPG, the transparency turns white.

File size

Transparent PNGs can be large. If you need a smaller file for the web, convert to WebP with the PNG to WebP tool, which keeps transparency.
