When you need a white background
Amazon, eBay, Etsy and many job or government forms ask for a plain white background. A white background makes the subject stand out and looks consistent across a shop.
Step 1: take a photo with clear edges
Shoot in daylight with the subject a little away from the wall. Strong contrast between subject and background gives cleaner cut-outs.
Step 2: remove the old background
Open the background remover, add the photo and choose a white background. Processing takes roughly 5 to 15 seconds and nothing leaves your device.
Step 3: fix small details
Check hair, straps, jewellery chains and shadows. The Restore and Erase brushes let you add back or remove small areas.
Step 4: size it for where it is going
For online shops, a square image works best: see the Amazon listing and Etsy listing pages. For a form with a size limit, compress it with the 200KB tool.
Pure white or almost white?
The tool fills the background with pure white (#FFFFFF). Marketplaces that require pure white check the pixel value, so avoid taking a screenshot afterwards, which can slightly change the colour.
Passport and ID photos
Official photos have their own rules about shadows, head size and background. Use the passport photo makers and confirm the rules on the official website.
